If you're anything like me, you've experienced those nights when your mind just won't turn off, replaying tasks, worries, and endless to-dos.
With the world we live in today—full of constant notifications, emails, and the pressure to always be on—it's no wonder that feeling overwhelmed has become our new normal.Â
But there's a simple practice that can make a huge difference: a brain dump. This straightforward technique has been a game-changer for me, significantly reducing my stress and helping me find calm in the chaos.
It even improves sleep quality if you do it before bed. Let me share how incorporating brain dumps into your routine can offer you the relief you've been searching for.

What is a Brain Dump?
A brain dump is a simple way to move all your thoughts, tasks, worries, and ideas from your mind to somewhere else. This could be a note on your phone, a document on your computer, or—what I prefer—a paper notebook and pen. Writing things down acts like a release valve, clearing your mind and easing the feeling of being mentally overloaded.
The Science Behind the Relief
Research shows that jotting down your thoughts can help lower stress. A study in the Journal of Experimental Psychology found that people who wrote down their tasks before bed fell asleep faster than those who didn't. Writing things down before sleep can keep you from lying awake with your mind full of thoughts.
The first time I tried it, I was surprised by how well it worked. Even though I hadn't solved any problems yet, just the act of writing them down made me feel calmer.
It was as if my brain thought it didn't need to keep those thoughts in the front of my mind anymore because they were stored somewhere else.
Also, doing a brain dump can make your thinking and decision-making better by clearing out mental space that's clogged with unfinished tasks and worries. This is called "mental decluttering," and it helps you focus better and get more done.
The Therapeutic Act of Writing by Hand
Writing your thoughts down on paper has its benefits, even though using digital tools is easy. Research shows that writing by hand involves your brain more deeply than typing, helping you remember better and process your emotions more effectively.
A study in Applied Cognitive Psychology explains that writing by hand makes you connect more with what you're writing, leading to a deeper understanding and engagement with your thoughts.
I highly recommend writing your thoughts down on paper, as it works best for me due to its deeper engagement with the brain and better emotional processing. However, when I don't have paper and a pen handy, I resort to using my phone or computer to declutter my mind.
It's about finding what works for you at the moment to get those thoughts out.
If you're inclined to go the handwritten route, which I highly recommend for its added therapeutic benefits, choosing a notebook and pen that you enjoy using can enhance the experience.
Here are the notebook and pen that have been my go-to's for years and have significantly contributed to making my brain dump sessions something I look forward to.
